The Coupé de ville Binder was the second Royale to be produced but the first to be sold. At the time it was sold in 1932 to french clothing manufacturer Armand Esders the car was a two-seater with an open body and no headlamps. The car styled by Ettore's eldest son, Jean, was known as the Royale Esders Roadster.
When the Royale Esders Roadster was bought by french politician Paternotre it was rebodied by coach builder Henri Binder and became known as the Coupé de ville Binder.
Before the World War II the coupé was supposed to be delivered to the King of Romania but that never happened due to rise of the war. During this difficult period the car was hidden from the Nazis in the sewers of Paris.
In the following years the Coupé de ville Binder was purchased by Dudley c. Wilson in 1954, Mills B Lane and William Lyon in 1986. Finally in 1999, after acquiring Bugatti, the Volkswagen Group bought the car...
