Cars has reached a new production record for a calendar year with 1.49 million vehicles built in 2013, and there are still a few weeks of production left. It is the third consecutive year that Mercedes has set a new production record.

"With this production record, Mercedes-Benz is setting yet another benchmark. This attests to the good customer response to our products,” said Andreas Renschler, head of manufacturing and procurement at Mercedes-Benz Cars and Mercedes-Benz Vans.

From January to November, Mercedes sold 1,322,500 cars, a 10.7% improvement over the previous year. It is also equal to Mercedes’ 2012 production.

The major contributors to Mercedes’ growing sales were its new compact models – the A-ClassA-Class Gen.3 [W 176]Mercedes-Benz A-Class Gen.3 [W 176]Germany, 2012 > present41 versions

. They sold 336,981 of the cars, up 67.2%, since January.

Mercedes’ SUVs are also doing well with combined growth of 14.4% over the previous year.

To keep up with production, Mercedes added 21 special shifts at the Rastatt factory this year, plus 10 shifts at the Bremen factory, 10 at the Tuscaloosa factory, four at the Sindelfingen factory and an extra shift every weekend at the Untertürkheim factory that builds engines.

For 2014, Mercedes is investing several billion euros in expanding and improving production. It will spend about €4 billion in China, $2.4 billion at the Tuscaloosa factory to build the new C-ClassC-Class 5Mercedes-Benz C-Class 5Germany, 2014 > present115 versions
