Stage 2: Al Attiyah back on track!

Stage 2: Al-Attiyah back on track!

After a miserable first stage where he fell down to 35th position, Nasser Al-Attiyah was able to bounce back on the second leg of the 2012 Dakar and to win the 290km special, ahead of Stephane Peterhansel who took the overall lead.

On Sunday Al-Attiyah had lost 10 minutes after engine troubles cruised the path of his Hummer at the end of the inaugural stage, but on the 777km run between Santa Rosa de la Pampa and San Rafael he came back finishing the 290km special in two hours 47 minutes 18 seconds, 54 seconds faster than MINI driver Stephane Peterhansel.

Robby Gordon in Hummer was third, almost two minutes behind Peterhansel and ahead of Kryztof Holowczyc, with Nani Roma closing the top-five.

After the win Al-Attiyah stands sixth overall, 8:47 off leader Peterhansel. Holowczyc is third, De Villiers fourth and Roma fifth.

In the bikes KTM riders Marc Coma and Cyril Despres were first and second on the second stage of the 2012 Dakar, with the Spaniard taking the overall lead. Despres is now 2:52 off him overall, with Chilean “Chaleco” Lopez 2:30 off the leader's pace.

It seems like a lot of the former VW drivers had that problem though. The South African driver in the Toyota (I forget his name) had the same problem, where he was scrambling for a ride just before th...

Giniel de Villiers who won in 2009. Thanks for that, I did not know he also had issues to find a team, I just read about it, searching the net after your message.
