Volkswagen is the currently largest German producer of passenger cars. The company was founded in 1937 and achieved global iconic status with its post-war model known as the "Beetle".
Today, the brand belongs to the large conglomerate Volkswagen Group, which owns brands other than Volkswagen itself. Currently, those are: Audi (1964), Bentley (1998), Bugatti (1998), Lamborghini (1998), Seat (1990), Škoda (1991) and Volkswagen Comercial Vehicles (VWCV), besides Volkswagen Cars. It is also a controlling shareholder at the heavy trucks manufacturer Scania AB since March 2008.
The Group is the third largest automobile manufacturing group in the world and the largest in Europe. It is reported that they also intend to outdo Toyota, becoming the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer.
