Less than 300 units of the Project One hypercar will be produced by AMG

Mercedes-AMG is working on the development of a new hypercar to challenge Aston Martin and Red Bull's AM-RB 001. Codenamed Project One the model will be unveiled at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of its launch in 2018. The F1-powered hypercar will have 1000hp.

Mercedes Formula 1 engine

The Project One will be powered by a tuned down version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine equipped on the W07 F1 car. However, AMG boss Tobias Moers guarantees the car's redline will be over 10.000rpm.

With 1000hp promised as an output the hypercar will also feature the same energy recovery system found in current F1 cars: the MGU-K and MGU-H. The first converts mechanical and heat energy into electrical energy, while the latter takes heat from the exhaust to produce electrical energy.

Limited production

Mercedes-AMG is gunning at a very limited production, which according to Moers will be below 300 units. This will keep the €2 million car very exclusive, competing with likes of the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder.

Moers expects that by the time the hypercar is presented at Frankfurt Motor Show all units will already have been sold. The first buyers drives should take place in mid-2018.
