GM EV Sedan with 200-Mile Range in Earliest Stages of Development

Before it gets the green light for production, GM has to make sure the buyers are there.

is in the early planning stages for a mid-size EV sedan with a 200-mile range, but the car is still far from getting a green light. Doug Parks, GM’s global product development chief, said that the car would cost around $30,000, but GM is still deciding if there are enough prospective buyers to warrant the car.

The car would use GM’s second-generation of battery technology, which would allow it to more than double the range of the Chevrolet Spark EVChevrolet Spark EVUnited States of America, 2013 > present4 photos
but at roughly the same price.

“The real trick will be who can do a 200-mile car for more of the price range [$30,000] I’m talking about. We’re all in races to do that.”

, which provides a 379-mile range for $34,185. However, it is a series hybrid that uses an internal combustion engine as a generator to keep its battery pack charged.

While electrified vehicles are growing in popular in the US, hybrids and EVs only represent 4% of US auto market share. GM already offers a pure EV in the Spark and a plug-in in the Volt, plus multiple other hybrids in its lineup. The market will have to be ready before it adds any more electrified vehicles to its lineup.
