Emile Salmson, Ing was founded by Emile Salmson in 1890 to operate in the field of of steam-powered machines and pumps. In 1896 the company was renamed Emile Salmson & Cie, Ingénieurs Constructeurs and extended its activities to gas and petrol engines and hydraulic lifts. In 1919 the Company, located at Billancourt (Paris)enlarged its activities to the automobile industry under the name Société des Moteurs Salmson and launched its first cyclecar in 1920 and passenger and racing cars were produced as of 1921. In 1953 the company went bankrupt despite the great success of Salmson cars in racing. The last Salmson came first in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1957. The company turned to pump production.
