Mercedes-Benz will unveil the S500 Plug-In Hybrid at the Frankfurt Motor Show with 69g/km of CO2 emissions and 3l/100km fuel economy. To reach such low figures, it uses a 107hp and 251lb-ft electric motor that allows it to drive 30km (19 miles) on pure electric power and a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engine.
The car uses a second-generation hybrid system that can run completely independently from the internal combustion engine. It also has regenerative braking and intelligent management system that activates the hybrid only when it is most efficient. The system uses the navigation system to look for road grade, corners and speed limits for the upcoming 8km and decides when it would be best to use the hybrid system.
