Walter Rohl returning to the Pikes Peak on the original Audi Sport quattro S1

It’s been 25 years since rally legend Walter Röhrl competed in the Pikes Peak and ran to the victory in the famous and oldest hill climb in the United States in his nearly 600 hp Audi Sport quattro S1. Now Audi is going to join them together for this year’s competition, but only in for a demo run.

On July 11, 1987 completed the Race of Clouds in just 10 minutes and 48 seconds, which was a record on the unpaved dirt road. Faster times only came when the course started getting paved, work which has already been completed.

On July 8, it will only be the second time that Walter Röhl will be taking the “Monster” up the mountain. Although conditions have totally changed, the 150 curves over nearly 20 kilometres will still be very challenging.

Take a look at the video of the 1987 run at Pikes Peak from Walter Röhrl.
