Stage 4: Peterhansel returns to the lead

After a bad stage on leg three, Peterhansel won stage four of the Dakar Rally which connected San Juan to Chilecito in Argentina, to recover the overall lead in the standings.

Finishing the 326km special in a time of 3.49:33,  5:19 ahead of Argentina's Orlando Terranova (Toyota) and 6:42 in front of South African Giniel De Villiers (Toyota), the Dakar legend gave a boost to his goal of winning his 10th Dakar Rally.

After four legs Stephane Peterhansel leads with a 5:41 gap over De Villiers. Nani Roma is third ahead of overnight leader Krzysztof Holowczyc (Mini), while Robby Gordon (Hummer) closes the top 5.

"We just stayed out of trouble to avoid getting lost or having flat tyres and with a very consistent pace from the beginning to the end," said Peterhansel after the stage.

"This strategy paid dividends but I would have preferred not to lead the field tomorrow, since there will be no motorcycle tracks. This is not what I would have liked from a tactical point of view, but I think the others made a lot of mistakes, so we will race at the front."

In the bikes Marc Coma recovered some time in the Dakar Rally after winning the fourth stage from San Juan to Chilecito. Coma was the quickest in the 326km stage and recovered 2:02 on French team-mate Cyril Despres. Still the French holds to the overall lead by 8:10, while Portugal’s Helder Rodrigues is in third 26:48 back already.
