is suffering some teething problems. The SUV has been recalled for the third time since being redesigned this year. The latest problem could cause a fire in the engine compartment if not repaired.

The recall affects 7,600 Escapes with 1.6-liter engines built between October 5, 2011 and August 31, 2012. The problem comes from a part called the cup plug that could be loose and cause a rapid complete loss of engine coolant. It affects about 6,150 vehicles in the US and about 1,300 in Canada. Pre-production vehicles that Ford did not sell to consumers are also affected. The failure has only caused one engine fire. It happened on an Escape at a dealer in Tennessee that had not yet been sold.

Ford has linked the failing cup plugs to a machine breakdown at the Escape factory in England. While the machine was out of order, workers installed the plug by hand and some were done incorrectly.

According to Ford, the latest recall is unrelated to either of the previous recalls.

The first Escape recall was for an issue with the carpet that could get in the way of the brake pedal. The second recall affected all Escapes made to that point. A fuel line could fail and cause an engine fire. Ford told owners to stop driving their Escape immediately and came to their home to take the car themselves.
