"We are redesigning the DNA of the Fiat brand with a clear strategic objective to position it in the premium segment of the market.

"To do this, we are focusing on two of our car families which have had the greatest success: the 500 and the Panda," said Alfredo Altavilla in the Corriere della Serra newspaper.

Altavilla only hinted that one of the new models would be a more off-road capable Panda that could compete with compact crossovers. The new versions of the 500 are a complete mystery.

Fiat is hoping the cars will contribute to its goal to return to profitability by 2015.
