. All of them did fairly well, but the Volvo V40 is the safest compact hatchback that Euro NCAP has ever tested. Full results are in a table at the bottom of the post.

Volvo V40

While like most of the other cars on this list, the V40 received a five-star rating; it is also the safest car in its class that Euro NCAP has ever rated. It received a 98% adult safety rating, 75% child safety rating, 88% pedestrian safety rating and 100% safety assist rating. The 98% adult rating and 88% pedestrian rating are the highest scores ever recorded.

Volvo is working towards a goal in 2020 where no occupants are seriously injured or killed in a Volvo.

Audi A3

The A3 also received a five-star rating. It received a 95% adult rating, 87% child rating, 74% pedestrian rating and 86% safety assist rating. It was just behind the V40 in the adult rating. The A3 also has a pedestrian airbag that pops the hood up if the car has an accident with a pedestrian.

Ford B-Max

The B-Max received a five-star rating with a 92% rating for adult protection, 84% rating for child protection, 67% rating for pedestrian protection and 71% rating for safety assist. Ford says that it subjected the B-Max to 5,000 computer simulated crashes, 40 complete crash testes and over 100 tests where the car is fired into various barriers. It also has seven airbags, auto braking and is made from 58% ultra-high strength steel.

Kia Cee'd

Like the others, the Cee'd has a five-star rating. It received an 89% adult rating, 88% child rating, 61% pedestrian rating and 86% safety assist rating. It is the lowest rating among the five-star cars for pedestrian safety. The Cee'd has electronic stability control standard on all models before it becomes compulsory in the coming years.

Renault Clio

The Clio received a five-star rating. It received an 88% adult rating, 89% child rating, 66% pedestrian rating and 99% safety assist rating. Despite lower ratings in all other criteria, the Clio nearly met the V40's safety assist rating. It had the best child safety rating.

Isuzu D-Max

The D-Max is a compact pickup, and it received a four-star rating. It received an 83% adult rating, 67% child rating, 51% pedestrian rating and 71% safety assist. It was the only four-star rated vehicle in the test.
