Ecclestone Supports Idea for London Grand Prix

The Santander route uses important London landmarks as a course

Bernie Ecclestone supports the idea of holding a London Grand Prix in the future and says that he would give the event his financial backing. On Thursday evening, Santander Bank will unveil its idea for a London Grand Prix course during a promotional event.

Santander's event on Thursday includes the unveiling of a potential course that it commissioned the evaluation of. It also had a CGI film created that will show what the race would look like on television. The Santander route is three miles long and uses the streets of London and important landmarks as a backdrop. The route is unlikely to be used because it would tie up too many important roads

"With the way things are, maybe we would front it and put the money up for it. If we got the okay and everything was fine, I think we could do that. Think what it would do for tourism. It would be fantastic, good for London, good for England – a lot better than the Olympics," said Ecclestone.

Another idea is to turn the London Olympic stadium into a Formula 1 venue. This would not tie up traffic and still make the event easily accessible. Regardless, the race would be run in addition to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone because that track has a long-term contract with Formula 1.

Ok, the idea sounds interesting, but does F1 really need more street circuits. Honestly, I don't think so.
