Dakar Rally 2014 Kicks Off with 180km Special Stage

A Chinese Great Wall truck led the first stage

Portuguese driver Carlos Sousa led the first day's stage in his Great Wall truck

The 2014 Dakar Rally kicked off on January 5 with a 180km (111.8 miles) special stage running from Rosario, Argentina, to San Luis, Argentina.

Portuguese driver Carlos Sousa led the first day in his Great Wall Haval truck and beat three drivers from the Mini team. Sousa’s 2h20m36s was 11 seconds faster than Orlando Terranova in second place, and Sousa was 47 seconds faster than Nasser Al-Attiyah in third place. Race favorite Stephane Peterhansel had a tire puncture and finished four minutes adrift from first.

On the bikes, Spaniard Joan Bareda Bort on a Honda led over the first stage with a 37-second lead over Marc Coma on a KTM and a 1m40s lead over Cyril Despres on a Yamaha.

The stage for January 6 is much longer and covers 359km (223.1 miles) for the bikes and 433km (269 miles) for the cars.
