Chrysler Produces Fleet of Experimental Plug-in Electric Ram Pickups

There is a growing push towards electric cars. The world is probably not quite ready for a pure electric car without some sort of range extender, but that future is on the horizon. Chrysler is experimenting with a fleet of five plug-in hybrid Ram pickups that will be used by NV Energy, Nevada's primary electricity supplier.

The trucks use the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 found in the normal Ram pickup augmented with a electric motor. Chyrsler did not say how much the electric engine adds to the truck's power.

The five trucks used by NV Energy are the first of a fleet of 140 vehicles that Chrysler will test throughout the US. The test will take place over the next three years and Chrysler will supply plug-in Rams to seven other organizations. It will supply Rams to Yuma, Arizona, San Francisco and Sacramento, California,  Charlotte, North Carolina, Boston, Massachusetts, Albany, New York, Houston, Texas and Auburn Hills, Michigan. Chrysler selected these locations to give a wide selection of climates and situations to test in.

Chrysler says that it has not intention to selling the plug-in Ram to the general public. Chrysler also plans to build a fleet of 25 plug-in hybrid Town & Country minivans that will be introduced next year.
